Import from Gmail

The TrekMail importer connects to Gmail over IMAP. Use a Google App Password in the importer instead of your normal Google password. Do not paste your normal Google password into TrekMail.

Step 1: Create a Gmail App Password

1. Log in to your Google Account at myaccount.google.com.
2. Go to Security and turn on 2-Step Verification if it is not already enabled.
3. Open App passwords and create one for this import.
4. Copy the app password and keep it somewhere safe until the import has started. Use it in TrekMail instead of your normal Google password.

Google may not offer app passwords for every account. For example, the option can be unavailable for some work or school accounts, Advanced Protection, or certain two-step verification setups. If you cannot create one, ask the Google Workspace administrator whether IMAP access and app passwords are allowed for the account.

Step 2: Check IMAP access when needed

Personal Gmail accounts now have IMAP access enabled by default. For Google Workspace, the organization can control IMAP access. If the connection check fails after you have created an app password, ask the Workspace administrator to confirm that IMAP is allowed for the account.

Step 3: Start the import in TrekMail

1. Go to Migration in the TrekMail sidebar.
2. Click the Gmail provider card. The connection settings are filled in automatically (imap.gmail.com, port 993, SSL).
3. Email address: Enter your full Gmail address (you@gmail.com).
4. Password: Paste the App Password from Step 1. Do not use your regular Google password.
5. Click Check connection to verify and load your folders.
6. In Step 2, select the folders you want to import and set any options.
7. In Step 3, choose your destination TrekMail mailbox and click Start import.

Common mistakes

• "Authentication failed" or "invalid credentials": Use the Google account's full email address and a newly created App Password. A normal Google password will not work here. If you changed the Google password after creating the app password, create a new app password and try again.
• "App passwords" is not available: Confirm that two-step verification is on. The option can also be restricted by an organization, Advanced Protection, or the current two-step verification setup. Ask the administrator of a work or school account for the approved migration method.
• The connection check cannot reach Gmail: Re-select the Gmail provider card so the importer uses its default Gmail settings, then try again. If the account is managed, ask the administrator to check IMAP access.
• Google Workspace admins: Let each mailbox owner create and provide their own app password. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a chat, ticket, or shared spreadsheet after the import is complete.
