Migrate from Gmail to TrekMail

Migrating from Gmail (or Google Workspace) requires a specific security setup because Google blocks standard password logins for IMAP.

Step 1: Prepare Gmail

1. Log in to your Google Account.
2. Enable 2-Step Verification if it isn't already. (Google requires this for App Passwords).
3. Go to Security -> 2-Step Verification -> App passwords.
   • Note: If you don't see "App passwords", search for it in the search bar.
4. Create a new app password:
   • App: Mail
   • Device: Other (name it "TrekMail Migration")
5. Copy the 16-character code. You will use this instead of your real password.

Step 2: Enable IMAP in Gmail Settings

1. Open Gmail -> Settings (Gear) -> See all settings.
2. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
3. Under IMAP access, select Enable IMAP.
4. Click Save Changes.

Step 3: Start Migration in TrekMail

1. Go to Migration -> New Migration.
2. Source Host: imap.gmail.com
3. Source Port: 993 (SSL)
4. Source Username: Your full Gmail address (you@gmail.com).
5. Source Password: The 16-character App Password you generated in Step 1.
6. Start the migration.

Common mistakes

• Symptom: "Authentication failed/invalid credentials".
  • Cause: You used your normal Google password. You must use an App Password.
• Symptom: "IMAP disabled".
  • Fix: Double check Step 2. Gmail disables IMAP by default.
