Your TrekMail account password is the one you use to sign in to the dashboard at trekmail.net. It is separate from your mailbox passwords, the ones that protect your email inboxes. Changing one does not affect the other.
You should update your account password if you suspect it has been compromised, if you are due for a regular security rotation, or if someone who previously had access to your account should no longer have it.
How to change your password
- Log in to the TrekMail dashboard
- Click your avatar or name in the top-right corner and choose Account.
- Find the Password section.
- Enter your Current Password
- Enter your New Password and confirm it by typing it again
- Click Update Password
Your new password takes effect immediately. Other signed-in dashboard sessions and remembered devices are revoked; the browser you used to make the change remains signed in with a refreshed session.
After changing it, update the saved password in your password manager and remove the old one from browsers or devices you no longer use. This password does not change a mailbox password, an IMAP/SMTP password, or a Drive device password.
Password requirements
TrekMail enforces a minimum password strength to keep your account secure:
- At least 12 characters long.
- No more than 72 bytes long. Most ordinary passwords stay well below this limit.
- It cannot be the same as your sign-in email.
- In production, TrekMail also rejects passwords found in known data breaches.
Use a unique password generated by a password manager. You do not need to invent special character rules yourself; a long, unique generated password is the safest choice.
Tip: A password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, etc.) can generate and store a strong random password for you so you never have to remember it. This is the most practical way to use truly secure passwords across all your accounts.
What if I forgot my current password?
If you are already logged out and cannot get in:
- Go to the TrekMail sign-in page at trekmail.net
- Click Forgot Password? below the login form.
- Enter the email address associated with your account.
- Check that inbox for the password-reset link.
- Click the link in the email and follow the prompts to set a new password
Reset links expire after 1 hour for security. If yours expires before you use it, request a new one by repeating the steps above.
Note: If you signed up with a connected provider and never set a password, you cannot use the reset flow because there is no password to reset. Sign in with that provider, then use the Password section on the Account page to add one.
Social login and password
If your account is linked to a social provider, you can also set an email-and-password login from Account → Password. This gives you a backup way to log in if the provider is unavailable.
Setting a password on a social login account does not remove the social login, both work independently.
This is different from your mailbox password
A common source of confusion: your TrekMail account password (dashboard login) and your mailbox password (email login) are two entirely separate credentials.
| Password type | Used for | Where to change |
|---|---|---|
| Account password | TrekMail dashboard | Account → Password |
| Mailbox password | Webmail, Outlook, iPhone, etc. | Mailboxes → Change Password |
Changing your account password does not change or affect any of your mailbox passwords. If you need to change a mailbox password, see the admin mailbox password guide or the self-service guide.
