Add Your Outlook.com Account to TrekMail
If you use an @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or Microsoft 365 work address, you can connect it to TrekMail and read and send from it alongside your other mail. Microsoft accounts don't use a password or an app password here — you connect with a single Sign in with Microsoft step, and TrekMail never sees or stores your password.
Why Outlook is a little different
In 2024 Microsoft turned off password and app-password access to Outlook.com over IMAP and SMTP. The only supported way for another mail app to read and send your Microsoft mail is Microsoft's own secure sign-in (OAuth). That's exactly what TrekMail uses: you approve access on Microsoft's website, and Microsoft hands TrekMail a revocable key — not your password. You can withdraw that access at any time from your Microsoft account, and nothing else in your account is exposed.
Connect it in TrekMail
- In TrekMail webmail, click your profile picture (top-right) → Settings → Connected accounts.
- Click Connect an account and type your Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or Microsoft 365 address. TrekMail recognizes it as a Microsoft account.
- Instead of a password field, you'll see a Continue with Microsoft button. Click it.
- A Microsoft sign-in page opens. Sign in to the account you're connecting, then review the access request — it asks to read and send your mail and to keep that access. Click Accept.
- Microsoft returns you to TrekMail, which tests the connection and adds the account. That's it — no password, no server settings.
Your Microsoft mail now appears in the sidebar under Connected accounts, ready to read, reply, and include in All inboxes. When you reply or send from that address, the message goes out through Microsoft's own servers, so it arrives from your real address and lands in your Outlook Sent folder.
Work or school (Microsoft 365) accounts
Personal Outlook.com and Hotmail accounts connect on your own. If you're connecting a Microsoft 365 work or school mailbox, your organization's administrator may need to approve TrekMail's access first — and IMAP access has to be enabled for your mailbox. If the sign-in screen says approval is required, forward the request to your IT admin, or ask them to allow it, then try again.
Reconnecting later
Microsoft's secure key is refreshed automatically in the background, so you normally never have to touch it. Occasionally — if you change your Microsoft password, revoke access, or leave the account unused for a long time — Microsoft ends the key and the account shows a Reconnect needed marker. Open Settings → Connected accounts, click the account, and choose Reconnect with Microsoft to sign in once more. Nothing is lost; the account keeps its place, color, and settings.
If it won't connect
Make sure you signed in to the correct Microsoft account on the sign-in page — if your browser was already signed into a different one, use the account switcher. For a work or school address, a "needs admin approval" message means your organization hasn't allowed TrekMail yet (see above). For anything else, see Fixing connected account problems.
