Connecting Apple Mail (macOS)

Apple Mail is built into every Mac, iPhone, and iPad — no download required. Once you add your TrekMail mailbox, you can read, send, and manage email with the same familiar interface Apple users already know.
The one catch: Apple Mail tries to auto-detect your mail server settings, and it gets it wrong for custom-domain email like TrekMail. You will need to enter the server details manually. This guide walks you through it.
What you will need
- Your full TrekMail email address — for example,
alice@yourdomain.com - Your mailbox password (not your TrekMail dashboard password — they are different)
- A Mac running macOS 10.14 (Mojave) or later, or an iPhone/iPad running iOS 14 or later
If you need your mailbox password, ask your account administrator or use the self-service password reset.
Setting up on macOS (Apple Mail)
- Open Mail on your Mac
- Go to the Mail menu in the menu bar → Add Account...
- Select Other Mail Account... and click Continue
- Enter your name, your full TrekMail email address, and your mailbox password
- Click Sign In
At this point, Apple Mail will display "Unable to verify account name or password." This is expected — it is trying to guess your server settings automatically and failing. Do not close the window.
- The form expands to show manual server fields. Fill them in:
- Account Type: IMAP
- Incoming Mail Server:
imap.trekmail.net - Outgoing Mail Server:
smtp.trekmail.net
- Click Sign In again
- Select the apps you want to enable for this account (Mail is required; Notes, Contacts, Calendar are optional)
- Click Done
Apple Mail connects to your mailbox and begins syncing your email. Depending on how much mail is in your inbox, the initial sync can take a few minutes.
Setting up on iPhone or iPad (iOS Mail)
- Open the Settings app
- Scroll down and tap Mail
- Tap Accounts → Add Account
- Tap Other at the bottom of the provider list
- Tap Add Mail Account
- Enter your name, your full TrekMail email address, your mailbox password, and a description (for example, "Work")
- Tap Next
iOS will try to verify the account automatically and fail — this is normal. The form expands to show server fields.
- Make sure IMAP is selected at the top
- Under Incoming Mail Server:
- Host Name:
imap.trekmail.net - User Name: your full email address
- Password: your mailbox password

Troubleshooting
"Unable to verify account name or password" keeps appearing and server fields are not shown Make sure you are selecting Other Mail Account at the account type screen, not iCloud, Google, Yahoo, or another preset. Apple's presets do not support custom IMAP servers.
Apple Mail created the account but it's showing the wrong server names
Open Mail → Preferences → Accounts → select your account → Server Settings. Check that the incoming and outgoing server names both show trekmail.net addresses and correct them if needed.
Sent messages are not appearing in TrekMail's Sent folder Go to Mail → Preferences → Accounts → Mailbox Behaviors. Make sure "Store sent messages on the server" is checked and that the "Sent Mailbox" is mapped to the correct folder.
Password prompt keeps reappearing Double-check that the username in both the incoming and outgoing server settings is your full email address (including the domain), not just the part before the @.
